My Partner and I Have Been Together for Six Months—How Do I Know If This Relationship Is Right for Me?

By Melissa | Ask Ashnique

Six months into a relationship, the excitement of getting to know each other may start giving way to bigger questions: Are we building something lasting? Do we want the same things? And how can I tell whether this relationship is healthy?

Melissa’s question

I’ve been with my partner for six months, and things are mostly good. We enjoy spending time together, but I’m starting to wonder whether we’re truly compatible and whether this relationship has a future. How do I know if I should keep investing in it or move on?

Ask Ashnique’s answer

Dear Melissa,

It’s natural to ask where a relationship is headed around the six-month mark. You’ve had time to see more of each other’s habits, communication styles, and expectations—but you don’t have to decide the entire future of the relationship right now.

Instead, look at how the relationship feels and functions in everyday life. Can you talk honestly, including about uncomfortable topics? Do you feel respected and able to be yourself? When disagreements happen, can you work through them without fear, insults, or pressure? Those patterns often tell you more than grand gestures or promises.

It also helps to talk openly with your partner about what you both want. You might say, “I’m enjoying our relationship, and I’d like to understand how you’re thinking about the future.” You don’t need matching timelines for every milestone, but it’s important to know whether your core expectations are compatible.

Pay attention to consistency. A caring partner’s actions should generally line up with their words. If you regularly feel dismissed, anxious, controlled, or unsure where you stand, take those feelings seriously and consider whether the relationship is meeting your needs.

Most of all, don’t stay just because you’ve already invested six months. Keep building the relationship if it feels mutual, respectful, and emotionally safe—and if you both are willing to communicate and grow. If it doesn’t, you’re allowed to step away.

Warmly,
Ashnique

How do you know if a relationship is right for you?

A relationship is more likely to be a good fit when you feel respected, emotionally safe, and able to communicate honestly. You don’t need to have every answer at six months, but you should be able to discuss what you want and see consistent care in your partner’s actions.
